Hammersmith Infant Neurological Examination (HINE) Training

Who is this course for? 

This training is available for Medical or Allied Health clinicians interested in or currently involved in clinical practice for early identification and intervention for infants at high risk of CP.
If this course is relevant to your role, please discuss with and get approval from your manager.

What content does the course cover?  

The Hammersmith Infant Neurological Examination (HINE) is a standardised and score-able clinical neurological examination that can be used to assess infants from 2-24 months of age. 
This training course will be presented by Dr Michelle Jackman, and Monica Toohey, and will provide standardised training in the HINE. All items of the HINE will be demonstrated with the correct approach to administration and scoring.
This includes:

  • Current evidence for using the HINE for the early detection of infants at high risk of CP.
  • Demonstrating the HINE with case examples.
  • How to use the HINE to assess infants at risk of CP.
  • Score cases of infants at risk of CP on the HINE to determine their risk status.
  • Understanding the role of the HINE in prognosis.

Who is presenting this training?

Monica Toohey (Senior Research Physiotherapist)
Monica works as a research therapist with the Cerebral Palsy Alliance Research Institute, and in the multi-disciplinary CP Early Diagnosis Clinics delivered in conjunction with neurologists from NSW Health. She has spent 10 years working with children with CP, and has a broad range of skills and experience across tertiary paediatric hospital, community health, disability and humanitarian settings in metropolitan, regional and international locations. As a clinician and trainer, Monica is passionate about using the available clinical assessment tools accurately and appropriately, while remaining kind and responsive to the needs of the infant and family.
