Managing actual or potential aggression (MAPA): Physical restraints

Is this course suitable for you or your Organisation?

This course is available:

  • for Cerebral Palsy Alliance employees only

Why choose this course?

This course is for employees working directly with people that display behaviours of concern that either threaten themselves or those around them. This course can only be attended after completing  Positive Approaches to Behaviour Support  or the new version,  Positive Approaches to Client Support

What content does the program cover?

This two day course on Safety Interventions equips participants to maintain and manage their safety and that of clients when dealing with escalated verbal or physical behaviours of concern and to know their responsibilities in these situations.
The focus of the course remains on taking a positive proactive approach to prevention and de-escalation and emphasises the use of restrictive physical interventions only as a last resort. Participants will have the opportunity to:

  • Identify behaviour that indicates an escalation of verbal or physical behaviours of concern and how to take appropriate measures to avoid, decelerate and/or de-escalate a potential crisis situation with a coordinated approach.
  •  Assess the level of risk associated with the crisis behaviour and make appropriate decisions related to the management of such risks.
  • Use suitable safety interventions to reduce or manage behaviours of concern.

**Please note there are some physical components in this course that involve simulating crisis situations with other participants, in order to learn and practise disengagement and holding skills in a safe classroom setting.

Full PPE is to be worn during practice of physical skills and will be provided. Please wear suitable clothing which will allow you to move comfortably and wear enclosed footwear.
