Why choose this course?

This online course is for people who work with people with disability, including their managers and supervisors to increase their skills and knowledge in the prevention of and response to abuse and assault.  The course is available either as a short course or as a Unit of Competency.

The material covered in the online content is very sensitive and can be confronting. This can be distressing to some individuals.

For individual learners undertaking the course in this format, we highly recommend being mindful of the potential impact the material can have. We recommend learners make themselves aware of support services available should they find the material distressing in any way.

For organisations offering this course to a range of learners it is highly recommended that the opportunity for a debrief be made available to participants. It is also recommended that participants are informed of support services available to them both from within the organisation and from other agencies eg: Lifeline Crisis Support: 131114.

What content does the program cover?

This course covers essential information for the prevention of abuse and assault and how to appropriately respond to abuse and assault including:

  • current legislation including human rights.
  • types of abuse, assault and risk of harm.
  • indicators of abuse, assault and risk of harm.
  • reporting requirements including the difference between children, young people and adults.
  • supporting alleged victims.

Short course option:

This learning activity includes informal quizzes and activities throughout the course.

Unit of Competency option:

This online course is mapped to the Nationally Recognised Training - Unit of Competency CHCCCS021 Respond to suspected abuse. To obtain a Unit of Competency, a more rigorous assessment is required including written assessments that are marked both online and by one of our expert facilitators. Please allow additional time. On successful completion a Statement of Attainment is awarded.
