Why choose this course?

Cognitive Orientation to Occupational Performance (CO-OP) is a cognitive and motor based intervention approach for people who have difficulties learning and performing motor skills. CO-OP was developed in Canada and is primarily used for children with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD). Evidence is emerging for people with cerebral palsy, stroke and autism.
It is important for occupational therapists and physiotherapists working with children with these diagnoses to understand and deliver the evidence based interventions available.

  • At Cerebral Palsy Alliance this is a professional development opportunity for occupational therapists and physiotherapists.
  • Following the 2 day course, attendance at a half day accreditation workshop is compulsory and staff will be allocated a session time for accreditation on 27/11/2019. Please keep this day free.  Skype attendance can be arranged.  Accreditation involves working with a client and providing CO-OP intervention and then presenting a short case study about their experience.
  • Cerebral Palsy Alliance employees are exempt from the course fee.









What content does the program cover?

The 2 day workshop with cover the following content:
• Theories that underpin the CO-OP approach.
• Application of the process of problem solving, dynamic performance analysis, guided discovery and strategy use in implementing this approach.

The half day accreditation course will enable participants to:
• Present and discuss participant’s CO-OP experiences including Successes, challenges and key learnings
• Demonstrate competence in CO-OP key features
• Discuss CO-OP enablers and barriers
• Become certified CO-OP Therapists

Does the program have any prerequisites?

Participants are sent pre-reading prior to the workshop which you are required to read before the workshop. Participants will need to have clients on their current caseload that are eligible for CO-OP intervention. Participants are also encouraged to bring case study examples for discussion throughout the course.

The two day workshop is a prerequisite for the half day accreditation course.

How will course work be assessed?


Includes informal assessment, involving participants’ discussions and group activities.

Accreditation course:

Participants need to prepare a short 10-15 minute presentation, using Microsoft PowerPoint. The purpose of the presentation is to illustrate your understanding of the key elements of the Cognitive Orientation to daily Occupational Performance (CO-OP) Approach ™ theory, and how they are used in practice. This should take the form of a case study; using video and/or demonstration where possible. This presentation will be delivered to CO-OP trainers, and other CO-OP course participants.

Workshop:  Two days
