Why choose this course?

Mental Health First Aid is the help given to someone developing a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis.  The first aid is given until appropriate professional treatment is received or until the crisis resolves.

The course aims to help you raise your awareness of the early stages of mental health problems as well as give you the steps and skills necessary to provide assistance to those in your work environment and to deal with a number of mental health crisis situations that may arise. 

What content does the program cover?

Course participants learn about the signs and symptoms of the common and disabling mental health problems, how to provide initial help, where and how to get professional help, what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective, and how to provide first aid in a crisis situation.

This education will be provided by an accredited MHFA Facilitator.

Mental Health problems covered are:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Schizophrenia
  • Bipolar disorder

Crisis situations covered are:

  • Suicidal behaviours
  • Acute stress reaction
  • Panic attacks
  • Acute psychotic behaviour

Course completion requires:

The assessment for this learning activity is contained within group activities and discussions during the session.
